What do we value at Good News Gathering?

Go to page 13 in your CLASS 101 syllabus and take a few moments to read the Scriptures listed under Core Value No. 2.  Have you ever thought about how much God loves people?  I John 4:10 (NIV) says, "This is love:  not that we loved God, but that He loved us and SENT His Son ...." (Emphasis added.)  In other words, God took the initiative.  He didn't send His Son into the world because we loved Him and asked Him to send Jesus.  He made the first move.  He sent His Son into a lost and dying world that was looking for God in all the wrong places.

Lost.  Think about that word.  That's the word Jesus used to describe people far from God.  He said," ... the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."  Luke 19:10 (NIV).  And Jesus expects His followers to take the initiative in seeking lost people.  He expects us to make the first move.  He said, "As the Father has SENT Me, I am SENDING you."  John 20:21 (NIV).

Think of GNG as a life boat.  Struggling to stay afloat in the sea around our life boat are thousands of people.  They will drown spiritually if someone doesn't reach out to them.  We have two choices.  Save as many as we can, or stay in our boat and let them struggle on.  We can row toward them and pull them in while working to expand the size of our boat.  Or we can float along focused only on those already in the boat and say things like, "I prefer a small boat.  It feels more like family.  If we pull in more people, I might not know everybody."  If Jesus was in our boat, do you think He'd be satisfied as long as one person remained lost at sea?

"Relational evangelism" simply means sharing with people who know and trust you what Jesus means to you.  We don't ask our people to stand on street corners holding signs and yelling at passing cars.

We don't ask our people to make cold calls or go door-to-door.  We don't ask our people to put tracts on car windows at Wal-Mart.  But we do ask our people to share their faith story with lost people in their circle of influence.  We'll explore this in greater detail in CLASS 401.

Remember, Jesus said, "As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you."  Who in your circle of influence is far from God?  Will you take the initiative?  Will you make the first move?
