What do we value at Good News Gathering? CORE VALUE NO. 3 - Growth

Go to page 13 of your CLASS 101 syllabus and take a few moments to read the Scriptures listed under Core Value No. 3.  Think about the statement, "We believe that fully functioning followers are committed to growing in Christlikeness."  Growing in Christlikeness involves two realities:

  1. It's Not Automatic.

We're not miraculously transformed into spiritual giants when we accept Christ.  Spiritual growth is a process that takes time and effort.  I Timothy 4:7 (Ph) says,  "Take the time and trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit."  We don't drift or coast into spiritual growth.  Developing Christlike priorities, Christlike character, and Christlike actions is an intentional, deliberate exercise.

  1. No One Can Make Me Grow Spiritually.

Spiritual growth is a choice only I can make.  I have to take responsibility for my own growth.  The role of the Church is to create an environment that is conducive to my growth.  That's why at GNG we provide Sunday worship gatherings that focus heavily on God's Word, the CLASS Series, LIFE Groups and a wide variety of ministries.  These are opportunities for growth.  But each individual is responsible for seizing these opportunities.

Studies indicate that personal reflection on God's Word (the Bible) is a key factor in spiritual growth.  That's why a significant portion of CLASS 201 is devoted to helping you learn how to study your Bible.

So, it's time for some self-examination.  How's your spiritual growth?  Do you sense that you are growing in Christlike priorities - does what mattered to Him matter to you?  Are you growing in Christlike character - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control?  Are you growing in Christlike conduct?
