“What is the highest and best use of a human life?”
Think about that question for a moment. Read it again. Now, personalize it. Ask yourself,
“What is the highest and best use of MY LIFE?”
Some would say that the best use of life is to pursue fame, fortune or a career in some esteemed profession. Others would say that the best use of life is to be the best spouse or parent possible. Still others would contend that the best use of life is to engage in humanitarian causes like ending poverty, world peace, or social justice.
None of these pursuits are inherently wrong. But, let’s think about the question again with a slight twist:
“AS A CHRISTIAN, what is the highest and best use of MY LIFE?”
You see, if I really believe to the core of my being that the God of the universe so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son to die for our sins; and if I really believe that faith in Jesus Christ brings hope for this life and hope for eternity; then, the highest and best use of my life is to introduce everyone I can to:
The God who loves them
The Son who saves them
The Holy Spirit who empowers them to live a new life now and for eternity
Everything else we discuss over the next two weeks hinges upon what you believe is the highest and best use of your life. If you aren’t sure, you will not be motivated to SHARE the Good News with others. If you aren’t certain that God really loves the world or that Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life”, then it is unlikely that you will reach out to others.
So, during your Quiet Time today, reflect on the question. Examine yourself. How clear are you about what is the highest and best use of your life?
