Fort Hill Earthworks Trail – 4.6 mile loop trail considered moderately challenging due to climbing stairs to a lookout and hilly terrain. All a noteworthy, good hike. We will meet and end at the parking lot with the shelter house and restrooms. Bring your lunch for the end of the hike and a devotion time.Â

Fort Hill is one of the best-preserved examples of an ancient hilltop enclosure. Fort Hill was built by American Indians of the Hopewell Culture, who lived in Ohio about 2,000 years ago. Despite the name, Fort Hill was not an actual fort used for warfare, but more likely a ceremonial gathering place. Fort Hill is also a nature preserve, and the 1,300 acres are home to one of southern Ohio’s largest mature forests, with many towering old trees.

Where: Kamelands Trailhead
Directions: 14605 US-50, Bainbridge, OH 45612. West of Cave Road. The parking lot is behind an old brown barn. To the right of the driveway a trail sign leads you underneath Hwy 50 through an old cattle tunnel and onto the Kamelands Trail.
Kamelands Trail: 2 mile moderate loop. Mostly level trail. This trail leads through rolling meadows to the wooded corridor bordering the high bluffs of Rocky Fork Creek, directly across the gorge from the Forest Museum. This trail boasts immense ancient oaks, interesting rock formations, and an optional spur trail down to the stream.
