The Blessings and Benefits of Knowing Scripture 01-11-2026 9:00 AM
“If you wish to know God, you must know his Word. If you wish to perceive His power, you must see how He works by his Word. If you wish to know His purpose before it comes to pass, you can only discover it by His Word.”
- Charles Spurgeon
It is safe to say that we exist in one of the most Biblically illiterate times in American history. The vast majority of even professing Christians, much less the unbelieving masses, have read the entirety of the Bible. Many are completely ignorant of even the most basic facts about the Bible. Most people, Christians included, have no idea what the Bible claims about itself, about its purpose, and about its impact on our lives.
And this is so dangerous because, as Charles Spurgeon said, we cannot truly know God without knowing his Word.
And one of the most obvious things about Jesus is that he “KNEW” God’s word. He hadn’t simply read or heard some of it. He was not a fare-weather fan of its moral principles. He didn’t simply have respect for it. He KNEW it inside and out. He understood what it was arguing, he lived according to its dictates, and he used it in every area of his life. Truly, it was Jesus’ knowledge and use of the Bible that made him who he was.
All around us, we see a world groping about in Biblical blindness. But it does not have to be that way for us. During this series, we will learn the spiritual practice of knowing the Bible. We will see how Jesus learned the Bible, we will see how it can bless and benefit our lives, and we will learn the practices necessary to know it and use it as Jesus did.
